MODULE 6
Finishing the Pattern
Grainline
In this lesson, we’ll demystify grainlines by exploring how fabric is woven—warp, weft, selvage, and even the wonderfully stretchy true bias. You’ll learn how to choose the correct grain direction for each pattern piece, how grainlines guide placement on the fabric, and why directional prints or nap sometimes change your layout options.
Labeling
In this lesson, we’ll give your pattern pieces their official “passport”—learning the proper order of labels. You’ll also get a simple breakdown of style numbers (totally optional if you’re sewing just for yourself, but useful if you ever dream of designing a full collection).
Notches + Awl Punches
In this lesson, we’ll add the markings that help your fabric pieces sew together flawlessly—using notches along the edges and awl punches within the pattern. These small details act like a secret language between pattern and maker, ensuring your skirt comes together with accuracy and ease.
Seam + Hem Allowances
In this lesson, you’ll learn why we never cut fabric right on the stitch line—and how seam and hem allowances preventing fraying. We’ll walk through choosing allowance widths, and why test garments benefit from wider seam allowances. By the end, your pattern will be fully prepped for its first fabric test run.
