MODULE 6
Cutting Fabric
Preparing Fabric for Cutting

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to set your fabric up for success—because a beautifully sewn garment starts long before you take your first stitch. We’ll walk through preshrinking your fabric (so your perfect fit stays perfect), pressing it smooth, and checking the grainline so your skirt hangs gracefully instead of twisting or warping. You’ll also learn how to gently coax a misaligned fabric back on grain.

Layout + Pattern Marker

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to align you pattern pieces on your fabric for cutting. We'll touch on creating your own pattern marker—essentially a layout plan for your pattern pieces so you can make the most of every inch of cloth. We’ll walk through aligning every pattern piece to the grainline with accuracy, and securing everything in place so your cuts are crisp and confident.

Cutting + Marking

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to cut your fabric cleanly and confidently—whether you’re gliding along with a rotary cutter or making long, smooth strokes with shears. You’ll practice clipping notches, marking awl punches, and drawing in your dart legs so sewing becomes effortless and precise. By the end, every pattern marking will be transferred clearly and accurately, giving you beautifully prepared pieces that are ready to stitch without second-guessing.
